Greetings! We
have had a wonderful Summer
with lots of camping, hiking and backpacking and I was sorry to see the end of
the school holidays.

|
Audrey was a Parks Canada campground host at McLeod Meadows for two
weeks and she had a great time with the girls. I caught up on some projects at
the office and visited at the weekends.
After a week at home we headed off to the Badlands and camped at
Dinosaur Provincial Park and Drumheller. We had a blast at both places and we
combined a holiday with stock photography shoots.

Our next adventure was to Takkakaw Falls where we had our first family
backpacking trip. The campground was only 500m from the car but it was a great
chance to try out our new tent and to see if the girls enjoyed backpacking;
they did!
It was Audrey's turn for some time at home so I then took the girls
backpacking to Elbow Lake.

This was more remote than Takkakaw and involved a longer uphill hike with
packs but we really enjoyed ourselves and we're looking forward to more
backpacking adventures next year.

Last week I was in Jasper with friend Dave Lye. We went backpacking in the
Tonquin Valley for two nights where the weather was amazing and we came home
with some wonderful wildlife and landscape photographs. One of the highlights
was photographing rutting caribou in the Tonquin valley.
September is definitely my favourite time to be in the Canadian Rockies.
Snow has returned to the mountains yet the days are clear and warm. The fall
colours look amazing against the rich blue sky. My nature
photography class is this coming weekend and it looks as though everyone
will go home with some spectacular photographs....

Online training is proving popular!
|
|
My new online training series is
proving to be a very popular way to learn about photography.
Here is some early feedback: "I
enjoyed the videos a lot and I thought that, as always, you were very clear
and explained things in a very easy to understand way. So I definitely got my
money's worth for the videos, no question!" - Teresa Glod - Calgary

Richard teaching Photoshop Foundation
|
The Photoshop Foundation workshop on October 1st
and 2nd will be my last one for a while.
This has been a very popular workshop which has
evolved over the seven enjoyable years that I have been teaching it.
The October workshop will be a special class
that will be slightly longer and include tips on using Adobe Bridge and how to
create an efficient workflow with Aperture, Lightroom, Bridge and similar
programs.
Photoshop Foundation is aimed at beginner to
intermediate users who use either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. By the end
of the weekend you will be able to do the following:
-
Use common tools such as the clone stamp, healing brush, paintbrush, crop,
move, eyedropper, eraser and type.
-
Know how all the selection tools work. (Marquee, Lasso, Magnetic Lasso,
Polygonal Lasso, Quick Selection, Magic Wand)
-
Make complex selections using the selection tools collectively.
-
Edit images non destructively.
-
Understand how layers work and create complex layered images.
-
Understand how masks work. Create and edit masks quickly and easily.
-
Know which colour space to use for different purposes.
-
Have a fast and efficient workflow.
-
Understand the relationship between resolution and document size and know when
to resample an image and when not to.
The workshop is held in a dedicated computer lab
in Canmore, the class size is seven and you will receive 16 hours of
instruction. All in all it is excellent value!

I am now selling Adobe's Design Standard Edition for Mac for $400. This
is the full retail version, not an upgrade.
The package includes Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Acrobat Pro 9.
I also have the Photoshop CS5 upgrade for $120 (usually US$199)

Orca, rainbow and cruise ship.Johnstone Strait
|
In September, 2007, Jim Slobodian and I led a fabulous photography workshop at
Telegraph Cove on Vancouver Island.
For four days we went out in to the Johnstone Strait onboard the converted
coastal pilot boat "Gikumi".

|
The first day was superb but each day simply got better and by the end of the
week we had amazing photographs of eleven different marine mammals plus
wonderful photographs of bald eagles and other birds.
"Gikumi" is owned by Mary and Jim Borrowman and is an ideal platform for water
based photography; in fact many major wildlife film crews such as the BBC
Natural History Unit have used the Borrowmans and Gikumi when they have been
filming in the Johnstone Strait.
I am very pleased to announce that Jim and I will be returning to Telegraph
Cove in September 2012.
We will again be using the "Gikumi" and staying with Jim and Mary Borrowman.
The Borrowman's now have a new house where we will be accommodated.
This is a very special workshop with wonderful hosts. During the week you will
learn a lot about wildlife photography and a lot about the marine mammals that
we will be photographing.

Tradition and Technology report

|
This year's Tradition and Technology workshop was a lot of fun with
participants coming from as far as Quebec, Ontario, and B.C. During the week I
received some great questions and we covered a lot of topics including:
-
Tips for creating the best possible photograph in the field
-
Using filters
-
HDR photography
-
Digital workflow
-
Using the Develop and Library modules in Lightroom
-
Introduction to Photoshop
-
Using layers and masks in Photoshop
-
Making an income from photography
-
Tips on creating large prints
-
Using RAW files
-
Advantages of tilt-shift lenses
-
Composition
-
Critiques of photographs taken during the week.
Of course, the group also took
some wonderful photographs of the landscapes and wildlife that we saw during
the week.
Here is just one of the many great
testimonials that I received at the end of the week:
"Richard Berry is a gifted, creative artist and teacher. His five day
"Tradition to Technology" workshop has changed the way I capture, catalogue
and "develop" my images. Richard's enthusiasm and exceptional teaching skills
made this my best holiday (workshop) ever. His professional, positive,
patient, passionate presence provided a perfect platform for five students to
learn from his extensive experience. He willingly shared the "secrets" of his
success as a professional photographer. This was honestly the best course I
have ever taken. It exceeded my expectations. 10 out of 10!"
