ABOUT
Richard Berry is an award-winning nature, adventure
and commercial photographer based in Canmore, Alberta, Canada.
An experienced mountaineer, SCUBA diver, skier and qualified commercial
pilot; Richard specializes in making photographs from unusual places.
Richard is also a gifted teacher who leads several photography workshops
every year for small groups of students.
After using film for many years, Richard now uses the latest digital
technology to achieve high quality results for his clients. He uses the latest
digital printing techniques to produce incredibly sharp and long-lasting
prints. His fine art prints can be seen in homes and offices in several
countries around the world.
Born in Lancashire, England, Richard developed an early love of the
outdoors, exploring the peaks of the nearby Lake District and Snowdonia with
his brother, Chris. The boys also went SCUBA diving around the UK with their
dad.
It was Chris who first became involved in photography, while Richard
joined the Royal Air Force in 1983 and focused all his spare time on
mountaineering in Scotland and the European Alps.
In 1988, Richard took a mountaineering trip to Nepal. Chris had taught
him the rudiments of photography on his Nikon FM. Richard took the camera
along with him, and, inspired by the Himalayas, he discovered that he had an
eye for creating photographs. He candidly remarks that the results from that
trip are a testament to how well Chris taught him.
After leaving the RAF in 1990. Richard began a career
in the oil industry, which allowed him time to diversify from mountaineering
into powered flying, skydiving and a return to SCUBA diving (this time in
clear, warm tropical water!)
In May 2002, Richard was a participant in a workshop
led by the late Galen Rowell near his home in Bishop, California. He learned
an incredible amount from Galen and counts himself fortunate to have been
taught from such a renowned and talented outdoor photographer.
In 2003, Richard won an honorable mention in the Nikon
Photo Contest International for his photograph of Lower Yosemite Falls.
After being granted Canadian residency in the fall of
2004, he founded Richard Berry Photography, a photographic and digital
services business in Canmore, Alberta, where he lives with his wife Audrey and
daughters Erin and Kendra. The business has evolved and now includes a
successful photography school.
